Bio Media
The “Bio Media Sarlo Pond” technology was created in Norway in the 1980s and is now globally recognized in water treatment applications and a great success in intensive fish farming.
Bio Media Sarlo Pond enhances the development of microorganisms that are cultivated on its surface, a support specially developed for maintaining a biofilm that optimizes the water treatment process.
Bio Media Sarlo Pond is composed of small plastic pieces, designed to provide a large protected surface area in a small volume of material, which contributes to the development of compact high-performance filters or a significant increase in the treatment potential of existing filters.
Bio Media Sarlo Pond pieces kept in suspension in a moving bed biological filter create optimal conditions for bacteria culture that efficiently remove ammonia and nitrite harmful to fish in this process.
The use of Bio Media Sarlo Pond is important because it promotes the natural development of a multilayered ecosystem dedicated to the microorganisms involved in the nitrification and denitrification process.
In the layer closest to the Bio Media, anaerobic and facultative bacteria develop due to oxygen scarcity. As this layer moves away from the surface and becomes enriched with oxygen, ideal conditions are created for the development of aerobic bacteria.
Bio Media Sarlo Pond provides maximum active surface area for biofilm formation, much greater than other types of static media.
The movement of Bio Media Sarlo inside the filter causes old and dead bacteria to be displaced outward. This creates space for younger and more active bacteria to quickly colonize the space. The interior of the Bio Media is a protected surface that allows bacteria colonies to naturally follow their life cycle and maturation, which at the end of life, feed the final stages of the nitrification cycle. Bio Media Sarlo Pond was designed to provide the best possible habitat for young or mature beneficial bacteria colonies.
Unlike static filtration media (foam, among others), Bio Media Sarlo Pond has a design specially engineered to move freely inside your filter. The random and constant movement provided by the water pump or aeration system promotes self-cleaning of the Bio Media, eliminating maintenance. This allows the filter to achieve maximum efficiency without the disruption of periodic cleaning, avoiding unnecessary loss of bacteria inside the filter.
